Self-esteem refers to the way you value and view yourself – your sense of self-worth, confidence, and belief in your abilities. Healthy self-esteem allows you to accept strengths and weaknesses, set boundaries, pursue goals, and cope with setbacks. Low self-esteem often shows up as harsh self-criticism, feelings of inadequacy, avoidance of challenges, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or an ongoing fear of being exposed as a fraud.
Self-esteem is shaped by many factors over time: early relationships, cultural messages, life events, school or work experiences, and internalized beliefs. It is not a fixed trait. With the right support and practical strategies, most people can rebuild a more balanced and compassionate inner voice.
People seek help for self-esteem for many reasons. Some come because they struggle with persistent negative self-talk that affects mood and choices. Others are motivated by relationship difficulties, avoidance of new opportunities, or chronic comparison to others that drains confidence.
Low self-esteem can also be connected to specific life events like breakup, career transitions, bullying, childhood emotional neglect, or traumatic experiences. It often co-occurs with anxiety, depression, body image concerns, social anxiety, or impostor feelings at work. Even people who look outwardly successful can have fragile self-worth and seek therapy to make internal changes.
Therapy for self-esteem may address practical skills like assertiveness, coping with criticism, and restructuring self-critical thoughts. It also often explores deeper sources of shame, patterns learned in relationships, and ways to cultivate self-compassion and resilience.

That said, in-person therapy remains a strong option for those who prefer face-to-face contact. Online therapy is not inherently superior—rather, it offers distinct conveniences and access that often lower barriers to getting consistent help for self-esteem work.

Deciding to work on self-esteem is a courageous first step. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Start by identifying one small goal—speaking up more in a meeting, setting a boundary with a friend, or practicing kinder self-talk—and mention it when you contact a therapist.
If reaching out feels daunting, consider scheduling a brief consultation or sending a message to ask about fit. Remember that therapy is a collaborative process: finding the right therapist may take a try or two, and that is normal. Each step toward support is progress.
Finding online therapy options can make starting easier and more private. If you’re ready, look for a therapist who specializes in self-esteem and who offers a format that fits your life. With consistent practice and a supportive therapist, many people build a steadier, kinder sense of self-worth that changes how they relate to themselves and others.
