Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
Whether this is your first session or 100th, searching for a new therapist can feel overwhelming or daunting. Picking a person you trust to hear your struggles from a picture and a paragraph is no small thing! Here’s a little bit more about me to help guide your decision.
PLEASE NOTE: currently all my evening slots are full. I do apologize, these times go fast! My current available hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm EST.
My background:
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds. I earned my doctorate in 2013 from the University of Virginia and have worked in clinic, hospital, university, and military settings. Previously, I saw clients at and directed a clinic for families and children, and I also have more general experience across age groups and areas of concern. I feel comfortable helping you with stress and anxiety, depression and self-esteem, trauma, motivation, parenting issues, relationship concerns, LGBTQ+ issues, Veteran or military issues, and can provide support for medical difficulties of your own or in those you love. I’m excited to step into an online platform and continue to help clients see their strengths.
My practice:
I aim to create an environment where you feel understood and supported, but also leave with practical tools that you can use immediately. I strive for transparency and collaboration, and want us to work together to find pathways to your goals. My approach is anchored in sound science and best practices, with plenty of wiggle room to adjust to who you are as a person and what works best for you. No matter what, I believe that there is a better, happier version of your life and I’d be privileged to help you find it.

Searching for a therapist can feel overwhelming whether it is a first session or the hundredth, and Dr. Hillary Schaefer understands how meaningful it is to find someone you can trust from a photo and a short paragraph. She is a licensed psychologist practicing in both Washington and New York who brings 12 years of clinical experience to her work in New York.
Dr. Schaefer earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Virginia in 2013 and has treated people across a variety of settings, including clinics, hospitals, universities, and military environments. She previously directed a clinic focused on families and children, and she also has experience working with clients of many ages and presenting concerns.
She offers support for stress and anxiety, depression, self-esteem concerns, trauma, motivation, parenting challenges, relationship issues, LGBTQ+ matters, veteran and military-related concerns, and coping with medical difficulties affecting clients or their loved ones. Dr. Schaefer is also comfortable addressing a broad array of other areas such as career stress, sleep problems, and ADHD.
Currently, evening appointment times are full; her available hours at this time are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time. She has transitioned to offering services on an online platform and is eager to help clients identify and build on their strengths through virtual care.
Her approach emphasizes a collaborative, transparent therapeutic relationship that pairs evidence-based methods with flexibility to fit each person’s needs. She aims to create a supportive environment where clients feel heard and leave sessions with practical tools they can use right away. Dr. Schaefer believes there is a more satisfying, healthier version of life to work toward, and she considers it a privilege to assist people in reaching their goals.
Many people wonder whether remote therapy can truly help. For a wide range of common concerns – including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and major life transitions – online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person care.
One major advantage is flexibility. Clients can choose the format that fits their life best, whether that means video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging. This variety makes it easier to attend appointments and maintain consistency in treatment.
Each participating clinician is a licensed professional, and clients have the option to switch therapists if they decide they would prefer a different fit. Online therapy offers an accessible way to pursue meaningful, evidence-informed support without altering the core goals and benefits of standard therapeutic work.
