Alan Williams

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

The first thing I want you to know about me is that I don’t follow a medical model of diagnosis and prescription. My task is to help you discover for yourself the meaning behind your emotions, experiences, relationships, history, thoughts, beliefs… so that you can do what you need to cope and thrive in your life. Clients describe me as “warm and engaging”. I won’t make you feel like a lab rat, you will feel my empathy and compassion, maitri… instead.

I’m fundamentally a relationship counsellor, trained in couple and family therapy, and I primarily see the world through a lens of relationships and attachment. I am a PACFA Registered Clinical Counsellor, and a Certified Imago Therapist. I use the Imago dialogues with couples to repair disconnection, enhance emotional intimacy, find out what you need from each other to feel loved and cared for, and help you ask for what you need in a way that vastly increases your chances of getting it.

I love working with grief and loss, including voluntary assisted dying. I’m particularly interested in working with people (and their families), who find out their biological parents aren’t who they were told they are, due to adoption, donor conception, or other non-paternity events.

I clear phobic reactions with a highly refined tapping technique (derived from Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and the Desensitization component of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)). You don’t need a clinical diagnosis of a phobia or anxiety disorder (like OCD or PTSD). If you can identify a distinct trigger or set of triggers into a state of distress or panic, there’s a very good chance we can set you free from it.

I worked for 15 years part-time as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner, and have extensive experience supporting parents, particularly victims of domestic abuse, through mediation about financial settlements and arrangements for their children. If you are in high conflict with a hostile, disturbed, and abusive ex-partner, I can help you to cope, understand what’s going on, and keep the focus on the best outcome for your children.

I also worked for 18 years part-time for an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider, plus my own 38 years experience as an employee, means I can help you with the psychological and relational aspects of the workplace.

My profile might list anxiety as an area of expertise. I think that’s because it’s tied up in the BetterHelp/Regain system with areas I am keen to work in, like phobias and stress. But if anxiety is your focus, I’m sure you would be better off seeking someone who says that’s their thing.

I only work with adult individuals (18+) and couples. If you need a session outside of the standard times in my appointment calendar, feel free to ask.

About

Alan Williams does not work from a medical model of diagnosis and prescription. His role is to help people explore the meaning behind their emotions, experiences, relationships, history, thoughts and beliefs so they can find ways to cope and thrive. He is known for showing empathy, compassion and maitri, and his manner is often described as warm and engaging.

He is fundamentally a relationship counsellor, trained in couple and family therapy, who views many difficulties through the lens of relationships and attachment. His clinical approach prioritises connection and understanding within families and partnerships.

Alan is a PACFA Registered Clinical Counsellor and a Certified Imago Therapist. He uses Imago dialogues with couples to repair disconnection, strengthen emotional intimacy, clarify what each partner needs to feel loved and cared for, and support people to ask for what they need in ways that significantly increase the chances of receiving it.

He has a strong practice in grief and loss, including work related to voluntary assisted dying. He also has a particular interest in supporting people and their families when they discover that biological parentage differs from what they were told – for example through adoption, donor conception or other non-paternity events.

Alan clears phobic reactions using a refined tapping technique derived from Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and the desensitisation component of EMDR. A formal diagnosis of a phobia or anxiety disorder is not required; if a person can identify specific triggers that lead to distress or panic, there is a very good chance the approach can deliver meaningful relief.

He worked for 15 years part-time as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner and has extensive experience supporting parents, particularly victims of domestic abuse, through mediation about financial settlements and arrangements for their children. When people are in high conflict with a hostile, disturbed or abusive ex-partner, Alan can help them cope, make sense of the dynamics and keep the focus on the best outcomes for their children.

Alan also worked for 18 years part-time for an Employee Assistance Program provider, and his own 38 years of experience as an employee means he can assist with the psychological and relational aspects of workplace life.

Although his profile may list anxiety among areas of expertise because of system tagging, Alan notes that anxiety is often linked with the other issues he works with such as phobias and stress. If anxiety is the primary focus, he suggests people might seek someone who advertises a specific focus on anxiety.

He works only with adult individuals (18+) and couples. If a session outside the standard appointment times is needed, clients are encouraged to ask.

Is Online Therapy the Right Fit for Your Needs?

Many people ask whether online therapy really makes a difference. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges or navigating life changes, online therapy has been found to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person care.

One of the main benefits is flexibility – clients can connect in the way that suits them best, whether by video call, phone session, live chat or in-app messaging. That flexibility makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy life.

Each participating clinician is a licensed professional, and clients may change therapists at any time if they want a different fit. For many people, online therapy offers an effective, convenient way to work with a therapist on the issues that matter most.
