Heather Scarbrough

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

Hello, I am Heather Scarbrough. I have a Bachelors in Psychology, Bachelors in Family & Human Development, and a Masters of Advanced Study in Marriage and Family. I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) that works with children ages 3 and up, individuals, couples, and families.

In my undergraduate studies I tutored youth in underprivileged communities. I also volunteered at a daycare for a women’s shelter. In 2014 I was an intern clinician at La Frontera, working with children, adults, and families. In 2014 I concurrently interned at a private practice, Arizona Marriage & Family Therapy Clinic, working with individual adults and couples. In 2015 I began working for Jewish Family & Childrens Services (JFCS), where I also become trained in A-CRA, DBT and EMDR therapy. In my 4 years at JFCS I served as a clinician, a CMDP intake specialist, interim clinical manager, and Clinical Manager for the Child Crisis Hospitalization Team (CCHT). In May 2019 I transitioned to the role of Trauma Specialist at StreetLightUSA. There I served as the clinical director and primary therapist where I created and implemented policies and procedures, trainings, programming, and therapeutic curriculums for the opening of their new Behavioral Health Residential Facility for adolescent females at risk of or confirmed victims of commercial sexual exploitation (i.e., sex trafficking). I supervised staff providing services to residents and personally provided intensive group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy services to clients and their families.

I became a therapist for BetterHelp in April of 2020 to expand my experience using a telehealth platform while we were restricted from in-person therapy services during the peak of the COVID pandemic. I have found in being a provider for BetterHelp how we are making services so much more accessible and plan to continue being a provider here for years in the future.

I approach therapy from a use of multiple modalities in order to provide my clients an individualized approach that best fits their needs, versus a one-size-fits-all approach. I utilize empathy throughout our sessions, but there are times I may need to be directive and challenge my clients to try something new in order to help them reach their goals. I also may utilize humor when appropriate to relate to my clients and lighten our sessions, however you can be sure that I take our sessions very seriously. I will assign homework to be completed in between live sessions, in order for us to take what we discussed during live sessions and put it in action. This helps you to regularly practice coping skills, changes in thought patterns, or other items that we are working on to help you reach your treatment goals.

About

Heather Scarbrough holds bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and in Family and Human Development, as well as a Master of Advanced Study in Marriage and Family. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Arizona and brings 10 years of clinical experience to her work.

Heather provides therapy to children ages 3 and up, individuals, couples, and families, and her practice addresses concerns such as stress, anxiety, relationship and family conflicts, trauma and abuse, parenting challenges, LGBT issues, grief, intimacy-related problems, anger management, self-esteem, bipolar disorder, depression, coping with life changes, compassion fatigue, and ADHD.

Early in her career she tutored youth in underprivileged communities and volunteered at a daycare serving a women’s shelter. In 2014 she completed internships at La Frontera, working with children, adults, and families, and concurrently at a private practice, Arizona Marriage & Family Therapy Clinic, where she worked with individual adults and couples.

In 2015 Heather began working for Jewish Family & Children’s Services (JFCS), where she received training in A-CRA, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and EMDR therapy. During her four years at JFCS she served as a clinician, a CMDP intake specialist, interim clinical manager, and Clinical Manager for the Child Crisis Hospitalization Team (CCHT).

In May 2019 she moved into the role of Trauma Specialist at StreetLightUSA, serving as clinical director and primary therapist. In that role she helped create and implement policies, procedures, trainings, programming, and therapeutic curriculums for the opening of a new Behavioral Health Residential Facility for adolescent females at risk of or confirmed victims of commercial sexual exploitation. She supervised staff and provided intensive group, individual, and family therapy services.

Heather began providing telehealth services in April 2020 to expand her experience with remote care while in-person services were limited during the COVID pandemic. She values the increased accessibility offered by remote therapy and intends to continue offering those services.

Her therapeutic approach draws from multiple modalities to tailor treatment to each person’s needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all method. Heather balances empathy with occasional direct guidance to encourage new strategies, and she may use appropriate humor to build rapport. She often assigns practical homework between sessions so clients can apply coping skills and practice changes discussed during therapy.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people wonder whether online therapy can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person sessions.

One of the main benefits is flexibility – clients can meet with a therapist in the format that best fits their needs, whether through video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging. This range of options makes it easier to fit therapy into busy schedules and life demands.

These services are provided by licensed professionals, and if someone feels they need a different fit they can switch therapists. For many people facing common mental health and relationship concerns, online therapy offers an accessible and effective way to receive care.
