Matthew Dugan is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor in South Carolina with 23 years of experience supporting people facing serious and persistent mental illness and a range of other concerns. He holds a Master of Arts in Counseling from Webster University (2004) and is nationally certified as a Master Addiction Counselor, as well as certified in South Carolina as an Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor.
Across his career he has developed expertise in crisis counseling and several evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed therapies, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). He regularly works with individuals coping with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, trauma-related conditions, and Borderline Personality Disorder, and he addresses concerns such as stress, relationship and family conflicts, grief, intimacy-related issues, anger management, self-esteem, career difficulties, coping with life changes, and compassion fatigue.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Matthew is committed to assisting people through the coming out process and the particular challenges that can affect LGBTQ+ individuals. His guiding aim is to reduce suffering in its many forms and to help each person build a life worth living.
Matthew provides online services that include asynchronous messaging during weekday evenings, with availability for live chat, phone, and video sessions by appointment. He typically offers message counseling Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and he responds to messages received Friday through Sunday on the following Monday, generally within one business day. Live sessions are scheduled by appointment and are available during weekday evenings and Saturday mornings – 24 hours notice is requested for live appointments. Fees are determined by the client subscription with the service used, and questions about billing can be directed to the platform support contacts provided when beginning services.
Many people ask whether remote counseling can make a real difference. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or navigating life transitions, online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person sessions.
One major advantage is flexibility – individuals can choose the format that best fits their needs, whether that is video calls, phone appointments, live chat, or in-app messaging. This range of options makes it easier to access care without rearranging an entire schedule.
All participating therapists are licensed professionals, and clients may change therapists at any time if they are seeking a different fit. Online work allows people to receive consistent, professional support in a way that suits their day-to-day life and communication preferences.
