About

About me and my therapy practice

Hello,
Welcome to my profile,

I recognise that searching for a counselling might be daunting, with lots of information and so many to choose from, as a result, I have tried to keep the information below bitesize.

Best wishes for finding the counsellor you are seeking.

I am a qualified and registered BACP counsellor providing on-line counselling sessions.
I hold professional liability Insurance and regularly attend professional development workshops.
I have experience of working with a range of client reasons for counselling including anxiety, bereavement, depression, self harm, sexual abuse and domestic abuse.
As an Integrative Counsellor, I am able to use a variety of therapeutic elements which can be tailored to your unique needs.
I work in a humanistic way, focusing on creating a trusted relationship. Listening and asking curious questions is how we might create our relationship and discover what your counselling needs are.
Working this way can be useful if you are feeling something uncomfortable but are not sure what the cause is.
I aim to provide a unique space for you to explore your needs, without fear of judgement or criticism.
I respect your views and opinions and I won’t try and tell you what to feel, think or do, as we work together.
We will regularly review how things are going, to check that we are working in the right way for you.

I have been described as patient, kind and curious. I also offer creative ways of working through art materials and reflective writing. Working creatively can sometimes unlock and offer another way of communicating your unique life.

Practice description

I provide on-line and face to face counselling sessions.

I offer counselling to people aged 18 years old and older.
On-line sessions are available to clients thoughout the UK.
Both short term or long term counselling are offered, depending on what you need.
Flexible session times are also available, for those working a changing shift pattern.

Our first session
If you decide you would like to make contact, we can arrange an exploratory session to talk about how counselling might be useful to you.

In our first counselling session there will be some paperwork to complete, which we can do together. I will also share in more detail, how I work safely and ethical within the BACP framework.
We will also discuss your needs and agree our working agreement.
We can also explore more about what brings you to therapy and what you might like to focus on in future sessions.
This may feel a little strange especially if you are not used to being able to talk freely. ( At your pace, we can begin our work together.)

About

Michelle Lumley is a qualified and registered BACP counsellor with three years of experience, offering online counselling sessions across the United Kingdom. She holds professional liability insurance and regularly attends professional development workshops to maintain and sharpen her practice.

She has worked with people seeking support for anxiety, bereavement, depression, self-harm, sexual abuse and domestic abuse, among other concerns. As an integrative counsellor she draws on a range of therapeutic approaches that are selected to meet each person’s individual needs. Her practice is grounded in a humanistic way of working, centred on building a trusted relationship through attentive listening and curious, open questions.

This approach can be particularly helpful when someone senses discomfort but is unsure of its source. Michelle aims to provide a space where clients can explore their experiences without fear of judgement or criticism. She respects each person’s views and does not tell people what to feel, think or do; instead she collaborates with clients and regularly reviews progress to ensure the work remains appropriate.

She has been described as patient, kind and curious, and she offers creative options such as art materials and reflective writing when these may help. Creative methods can sometimes open alternative ways to express and understand aspects of life that are hard to put into words.

Michelle provides both online and face-to-face counselling for adults aged 18 and over. Online sessions are available to clients throughout the UK, and she offers short-term or long-term work depending on need. Flexible session times can also be arranged for people who work changing shift patterns.

An initial exploratory session can be arranged to discuss how counselling might be useful. During that first meeting she will complete any necessary paperwork with the client and explain how she works ethically within the BACP framework—BACP being the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Together they will agree a working arrangement, discuss the issues that brought the person to therapy, and identify possible areas to focus on. This may feel unfamiliar at first, and the process is always paced to suit the individual.

Michelle can offer support with concerns such as ADD / ADHD, anger management, anxiety, autism spectrum issues, bereavement, cancer-related distress, child-related issues, chronic fatigue syndrome / ME, depression, disability-related matters, eating disorders, health-related issues, identity questions, loss, obsessions, OCD, phobias, redundancy, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, self-harm, sexual identity, stress and work-related problems. She integrates methods including Gestalt, humanistic, person-centred work and transactional analysis into her therapeutic practice.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people wonder whether meeting with a therapist online can genuinely help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties or adapting to life changes, online therapy has been found to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person sessions for most people.

A major benefit of online work is convenience and flexibility. Clients can choose the mode of contact that suits them best – video calls, phone sessions, live chat or in-app messaging – which makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy life.

All therapists offering online services are licensed professionals, and if someone feels they need a different fit they may switch to another therapist. For many people, online therapy provides an accessible route to consistent, professional support without changing the core therapeutic process.
