Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
I’m Madeleine Heffernan, a licensed therapist, based in Cambridge, UK. I work in a number of different ways with clients, tailoring the therapy to the client and their problems. You can read more about my background, education, experience and approaches to therapy on my website locusofsolace.com and my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/locusofsolace
In addition to psychodynamic psychotherapy (which makes sense of issues in the context of past experiences) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (which draws on psychological understandings of negative thoughts and behaviours), I also work in a Compassion Focused approach (encouraging self-compassion) and sometimes use Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping therapy)
I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, & trauma and abuse.
I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. It takes courage to seek out a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. I am here to support & empower you in that journey.
The counselling may include: listening, exploration, understanding and insights regarding your inner experiences and life story (drawing on psychodynamic and CBT theories), tasks and observations for you to focus on outside therapy (if you choose), development of a supportive inner dialogue and other techniques.
I answers messages between 08.30 and 20.30 daily (up to an hour of messaging between us per week) and hold live sessions Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 08.00 and 18.00 (video, phone or instant messaging session).

Madeleine Heffernan is a licensed therapist based in Cambridge, United Kingdom, who adapts her approach to suit each client’s needs and the difficulties they bring. More about her background, training and ways of working can be found on her website at locusofsolace.com and on her Facebook page at facebook.com/locusofsolace.
Her practice draws on psychodynamic psychotherapy – which explores current difficulties in the context of past experiences – and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – which addresses unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. She also uses a Compassion Focused approach to foster self-compassion and at times incorporates Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as tapping therapy.
Madeleine has experience supporting people with stress and anxiety, relationship difficulties, family conflicts, and trauma and abuse. She works from the premise that each person is the expert on their own story and brings strengths that can help them navigate challenges. Seeking change takes courage, and she aims to support and empower clients through that process.
Therapy with Madeleine may include careful listening, exploration and the development of understanding and insight about inner experiences and life history, drawing on psychodynamic and CBT models. Where appropriate and chosen by the client, sessions can include practical tasks or observations to focus on between meetings, the cultivation of a more supportive inner dialogue, and other techniques.
She responds to messages between 08:30 and 20:30 each day, allowing up to an hour of messaging between therapist and client per week. Live sessions are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 08:00 and 18:00 and can take place by video, phone or instant messaging.
