Alan McNeill

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

I live in Glasgow and have been providing therapy for nearly 30 years in the NHS, in private practice and in other organisations such as LGBT Health, Gay men’s Health, Hospice and Chai Cancer Care. I mostly support people who are struggling to cope with the impact of a difficult childhood. This may be due to family dysfunction, bereavement in childhood, parents with issues of addiction, domestic abuse, or generally growing up feeling different to those around them, eg as a result of being LGBTQI+, leaving the adult with issues of Anxiety, Depression, low self-esteem, social skills/confidence issues and/or problematic relationship patterns. I also provide therapy for those living with trauma, abuse, or coping with grief and loss. I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many resources that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. My job is to help you locate them – and develop them, as well as providing an approach which will help you to better contain the events of the past using a child/adult model and Mindfulness which may allow you to function more effectively in the present, without so much of the influence of the past. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process.

About

Alan McNeill is a Glasgow-based therapist with 24 years’ experience, with a background in the NHS, private practice and work for organisations such as LGBT Health, Gay men’s Health, hospice services and Chai Cancer Care.

He mainly supports people who are finding it difficult to cope with the consequences of a challenging childhood. These difficulties can stem from family dysfunction, childhood bereavement, parents with addiction, domestic abuse, or from growing up feeling different to those around them – for example as a result of being LGBTQI+.

Those experiences commonly leave adults dealing with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, difficulties with social confidence or social skills, and repeating unhelpful relationship patterns. He also provides therapy for people living with trauma, survivors of abuse, and those coping with grief and loss.

Alan believes that each person is the expert on their own story and that they carry resources that can help them move forward. His role is to help locate and strengthen those resources and to offer an approach that helps contain past events using a child/adult model alongside Mindfulness, with the aim of enabling more effective functioning in the present without the same hold from earlier experiences.

He recognises that taking the first step toward a more fulfilling life takes courage, and he is available to support people through that process.

Is Online Therapy the Right Choice for Your Mental Health Journey?

Many people wonder whether talking with a therapist online can really help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties or negotiating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be as effective as traditional face-to-face sessions for most people.

A major benefit is flexibility – clients can connect in the way that suits them best, whether by video calls, phone sessions, live chat or in-app messaging. That range of options makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy life.

All participating therapists are licensed professionals, and clients have the option to change therapists if they feel a different fit would be better for their needs.
