Timothy ‘Tim’ McCann has spent the last 33 years in helping roles, a path that began with work in correctional institutions serving both teens and adult males. Those formative years shaped his approach to practice and influenced his decision to pursue a broader range of helping work.
After 16 years in the correctional setting he transitioned to an educational environment, where he spent the next 15 years adding a different set of skills and perspectives. Following his master’s program he worked at a wellness center supporting a wide variety of clients, including transgender individuals, gay and lesbian clients, couples, and military members coping with post-traumatic stress. These varied experiences have helped diversify his clinical abilities and inform his work with people facing many kinds of challenges.
McCann has six years of experience specifically providing therapy services and is licensed to practice counseling in both Colorado and Florida. He holds a Colorado Licensed Professional Counselor credential and a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor credential, identified as CO LPC 0015365 and FL LMHC MH25479.
He describes his approach as goal-oriented and client-centered, drawing from an eclectic range of methods while meeting each person where they are. Grounded in Carl Rogers’ humanistic philosophy, he also integrates cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, dialectical behavior therapy, and solution-focused brief therapy. His work emphasizes hands-on, practical strategies for problem solving. In keeping with CBT principles, he helps people identify unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns and learn alternative ways of coping with life’s stressors, and he values mindfulness techniques for restoring focus when it is most needed.
McCann has substantial experience working with troubled teens and adults and feels comfortable addressing difficult topics. His correctional work reinforced the belief that life is precious and that people can strive for second chances. He remains open to new challenges and continues to add skills to a broad base of experience.
On a personal note, he has been married for 30 years and has two sons. He and his family share their home with two dogs named Otto and Milly. McCann acknowledges that long-term relationships require effort from both partners and that, while not always perfect, good communication and purposeful effort can make life rewarding.
Many people wonder whether counseling delivered online can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person care.
One major benefit is convenience and flexibility - clients can meet with a therapist in the way that fits their schedule and comfort level, choosing video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging. This makes it easier to maintain continuity of care amid busy lives or changing circumstances.
Each therapist involved in online work is a licensed professional, and clients have the option to change therapists if they prefer a different fit. For many people, remote therapy opens access to consistent, practical support without requiring travel, while still using evidence-informed approaches to address a wide range of concerns.
