Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” ~ Anais Nin
Hello. My name is Karen Gano, and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in New Mexico, Colorado, Maine, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Australia. I received my Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh, and I have over 30 years of clinical counseling experience.
My specialty is what I call Empowerment Counseling. I have a Motivational Interviewing style, and I use Compassion-Focused, Client-Centered, Solution Focused Brief (SFBT), Mindfulness, and Strength Based therapies to assist clients in improving their outlook and life. I have a holistic and goal oriented practice, working primarily with women who are going through some type of life transition whether it be separation, divorce, career changes, relocation, empty nest, illness, etc. I also provide counseling to healthcare workers as I have been a practicing medical social worker throughout my career, and I have worked in trauma, emergency medicine, critical care, oncology, palliative care, and domestic abuse.
We can all benefit from talking to someone now and again. It is my primary goal to empower clients so that they can build and expand their “team,” discover their voice, increase self-awareness and esteem, and make wanted changes in their life. My professional and personal mantra is “Self-Care + Time = Healing.” I can help you with healthy coping strategies and tools to guide you from surviving to thriving.
I very much look forward to working with you!

Karen Gano is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh and 33 years of clinical counseling experience. She maintains licensure across multiple U.S. jurisdictions and in Australia, and holds licensed clinical social worker credentials in both Colorado and New Mexico. She is based in New Mexico and brings a long-standing commitment to supporting people through difficult transitions.

Her practice is holistic and goal-oriented, with a primary focus on women navigating life transitions such as separation, divorce, career change, relocation, an empty nest, or illness.
In addition to working with individuals facing life changes, Karen provides counseling to health care workers. Her background as a medical social worker includes experience in trauma, emergency medicine, critical care, oncology, palliative care, and domestic abuse settings, which informs her understanding of both professional and personal stressors.
Her clinical aim is to empower clients to expand their support team, find and strengthen their voice, and increase self-awareness and self-esteem so they can make meaningful changes. Her professional mantra is “Self-Care + Time = Healing.” She offers practical coping strategies and tools designed to help people move from surviving to thriving and looks forward to working with those seeking that growth.
For many common concerns – such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes – online therapy has been shown to be as effective as traditional in-person care. It can be a practical option for people seeking support for these issues.
One major benefit is flexibility. Clients can connect with therapists in the format that suits them best – video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging – which makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy schedule.
Licensed professionals provide online therapy, and clients have the option to change therapists if they need a different fit. For many people, remote sessions provide a convenient and effective way to make consistent progress with a mental health professional.
