Jennifer Altheimer is a registered counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), both professional counselling associations in Australia. She has 18 years of experience working with individuals, children, youths, couples and families from diverse cultural backgrounds and life situations, helping bring healing to relationships with self and others.
Jennifer brings warmth, approachability and clear commitment to her therapeutic work. She emphasises that growth in relationships often begins with healing the relationship a person has with themself - when someone develops greater self-understanding and self-respect, their connections with others frequently improve. Her style recognises the dignity of each person by acknowledging difficulties, highlighting existing strengths and celebrating individuality.
Her training and extensive experience cover family and relationship dynamics, interpersonal issues, grief and loss, family and domestic violence, multiple forms of trauma, depression, anxiety, parent-teen conflict and migration. Jennifer works with relationship and family concerns, parenting, self-esteem, coaching, stress, anxiety, LGBT-related matters, intimacy issues, anger, career concerns, coping with life changes and compassion fatigue.
In couples counselling she provides pre-marital support and uncoupling, and she supports couples who want to strengthen their partnership as well as those navigating separation. She also offers family counselling, coaching and group work.
Sessions are tailored to each person’s needs, using a strengths-based, client-centred approach and a range of evidence-based modalities and techniques. Jennifer views clients as the experts of their own lives and aims to help them access inner resources, build self-awareness, foster personal growth and improve relationships with themselves and others. Whether someone is adjusting to major change, processing a difficult event, pursuing self-development or feeling stuck, Jennifer seeks to provide a supportive therapeutic relationship as she journeys alongside them. Her practice descriptors include therapist of color, female therapist, gay, non-religious and liberal therapist.
