Bruce Barrett

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

Throughout my counseling career, I have always been interested — fascinated, in fact — in finding meaning and value in the experiences of others, joyful and sorrowful, frightened or courageous, and in helping them to grow in their own lives. Although I am not rigid in my approach to therapy, I see myself as a Narrative Therapist (Dulwich Model), with a strong background in Gestalt Therapy for dream work and understanding polarities (contradictions) in our lives, Gendlin’s Focusing for sifting through psychological uncertainty, and along with Focusing, a strong interest in mindfulness-based stress management as a support technique for personal growth..
I have worked as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Massachusetts since 2012 (including my licensure training), and for many more years prior to that as an Associate Psychologist (Masters Level) in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
I also worked for several years as a Certified Alcoholism Counselor (CAC) in Massachusetts in both inpatient and outpatient settings with a strong 12-step orientation. I am myself a recovering alcoholic, with 40 years of continuous sobriety — a day at a time!
I have a particular interest in working with people living on the Autism Spectrum, both adults and younger folks. Like many who work in the field, I bring personal family experience to the work, and I take pride in my ability to find common ground with people living on or near the Spectrum.
More generally, I have an abiding interest in working with military family members, including those who have long since left the life of being a Military Dependent. As a former Army Brat and “Third Culture Kid,” (TCK) I bring particular awareness and concern to the life-long issues of those whose developmental years were spent “inside the Fortress, ” as Mary Edwards Wertsch describes it, including those TCKs who grew up in cultures and countries overseas.

About

Bruce Barrett brings a long-standing commitment to helping people find meaning in their lives, whether their experiences are joyful, painful, frightening, or courageous. He practices with a Narrative Therapy orientation grounded in the Dulwich Model while drawing on Gestalt Therapy for dream work and exploring life polarities, Gendlin’s Focusing to navigate psychological uncertainty, and mindfulness-based stress management as a supportive tool for personal growth.

He has been licensed as a mental health counselor in Massachusetts since 2012, including the period of his licensure training, and earlier served as an Associate Psychologist at the master’s level in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He also worked for several years as a Certified Alcoholism Counselor in Massachusetts, providing care in inpatient and outpatient settings with a strong 12-step orientation.

Barrett speaks from both professional and personal experience in the area of addiction; he is a recovering alcoholic with 40 years of continuous sobriety. He also has a focused interest in supporting people on the Autism Spectrum, working with both adults and younger clients and drawing on personal family experience to connect with those living on or near the spectrum.

Additionally, Barrett pays particular attention to the needs of military family members, including those who long ago left the role of military dependent. As a former Army Brat and Third Culture Kid, he is attuned to the lifelong issues that can arise from growing up “inside the Fortress,” a phrase used by Mary Edwards Wertsch to describe that upbringing.

Located in Massachusetts, Barrett combines four decades of experience with an integrative, flexible approach to help clients pursue growth and resilience.

Is Online Therapy the Right Choice for Your Mental Health Journey?

Many people wonder whether online therapy can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or managing life changes, online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person treatment.

An important benefit is flexibility – clients can connect in the way that fits their lives best, whether through video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging. This flexibility makes it easier to maintain continuity of care and to fit sessions into a busy schedule.

All participating practitioners are licensed professionals, and clients are free to request a different therapist at any time if they feel a different fit would be better for their needs.
