Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
I am an experienced Counsellor specialising in life challenges, and supporting clients in changing their relationship with unwanted behaviours such as symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or addiction. I am highly motivated to support anyone who is curious to explore what a valued life means and what that will be for them moving forward.
I believe therapy is inherently a form of non-judgemental exploratory communication in which a counsellor and a willing expert (of their own life) can collaborate to clarify a problem, uncover the implicit want or need the problem represents, and then to develop and implement a plan of action to make that desire a consistent reality.
My approach is person-centred, and is supported by modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I also strongly believe in the benefits of incorporating bottom-up processing approaches (body/nervous system) to assist in emotion and behavioural regulation. I also believe therapy is to be tailored to the client and their unique presenting needs and personal contexts, not the client to any one modality.
I am eager to work with anyone seeking support, and I have extensive history working cross-culturally. I have a personal interest in supporting young adults given my specialised training, as well in men’s mental health.

With 4 years of experience, Joel McNamara is a counsellor who supports people facing life challenges and helps them change their relationship with unwanted behaviours such as symptoms of anxiety, depression, and addiction.
He is motivated to work with anyone who is curious about what a valued life means and what that might look like moving forward. Joel views therapy as non-judgemental, exploratory communication in which a counsellor and the client – the expert on their own life – collaborate to clarify a problem, uncover the need or want the problem represents, and develop and put into practice a plan to make that desire a regular part of life.
His practice is person-centred and draws on approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). He also values integrating bottom-up, body- and nervous-system-oriented techniques to support emotion and behavioural regulation.
Joel tailors therapy to each client’s presenting needs and unique context rather than fitting clients to a single modality. He has extensive experience working cross-culturally, and holds a personal interest in supporting young adults and men’s mental health. Joel is based in Australia and is eager to work with anyone seeking support.
Many people wonder whether online therapy can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person sessions.
One major benefit is flexibility. Clients can connect in the format that suits them best – video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging – which makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy life.
All therapists are licensed professionals, and you have the option to switch to a different therapist at any time if you feel a different fit would be better.
