Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
Hello, my name is Todd Nelson. I grew up and currently live in Central Illinois. I began work in as a millwright/carpenter until the job market faltered in the early 80s. It was time to go back to school. With a wife and child, I opted to join the Air Force to help with those expenses. After Desert storm and 10 years of active duty, I left the military. While working on my Master’s degree in counseling, I worked as an on-call therapist for an out-patient mental health clinic. I went on to become a full-time therapist with that clinic until I went on as a therapist at an in- patient facility for youth. After a few years there, I went back to my former clinic. In 2009, I took a full time position as Mental Health Professional within the Illinois Department of Corrections. In total, I have 29 years of experience in the mental health field.
If I were to describe my counseling approach, I would have to say that everyone has their own “ship to sail throughout life and my purpose is to help the captain navigate”.
Within that description, I would say I use a person centered, solution focused approach. I am very laid back and I don’t get caught up in citing any schools of psychology or therapy; what I call psychobabble.
My other interests outside the field are motorcycling and wood working.
Currently, I am accepting new clients, though there are no evening openings. If you are interested in setting an appointment, please let me know your preference for time to meet. Do not schedule appointments, as I do my own scheduling.
Let’s chat.

Todd Nelson grew up in Central Illinois and continues to live there. He began his working life as a millwright and carpenter, but when the job market declined in the early 1980s he returned to school and, with a wife and child to support, joined the U.S. Air Force to help with expenses.
He served during Desert Storm and completed ten years of active duty before leaving the military. While completing a master’s degree in counseling, Todd worked as an on-call therapist for an outpatient mental health clinic, later becoming a full-time therapist at that clinic. He then worked as a therapist in an inpatient facility serving youth, returned to his former outpatient clinic after a few years, and in 2009 accepted a full-time position as a mental health professional with the Illinois Department of Corrections. In total, he has 30 years of experience in the mental health field.
His counseling style is straightforward and client-focused. He uses a person-centered, solution-focused approach and prefers practical conversation over clinical jargon. He often describes his role with a simple metaphor – everyone has their own ship to sail through life, and his job is to help the captain navigate.
Todd works with a wide range of concerns, including stress, anxiety, grief, self-esteem, depression, relationship issues, family conflicts, trauma and abuse, sleeping disorders, parenting issues, anger management, bipolar disorder, and coping with life changes. He is licensed in Illinois as a clinical professional counselor; his license number is 180.003983.
He is currently accepting new clients but does not have evening availability. Prospective clients should indicate preferred meeting times rather than scheduling appointments directly, since Todd manages his own calendar. He enjoys motorcycling and woodworking when he is away from his clinical work and welcomes inquiries from those interested in starting therapy.
Many people wonder whether therapy conducted online can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person sessions.
One key advantage is flexibility – individuals can connect in the format that best fits their life, whether by video call, phone session, live chat, or in-app messaging. This adaptability makes it easier to maintain consistent care amid busy schedules.
Licensed professionals provide online therapy, and clients have the option to change therapists if they want a different match. For many situations, remote sessions offer an accessible and effective way to get support without sacrificing quality of care.
