Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
I am a psychological therapist, registered and accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and a Senior Accredited personal Development Coach with the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC) . I have 25 years of experience working in private practice, the English National Health Service (NHS), and in Higher Educational counselling services. I have worked with a range of adult clients, of all ages, diverse cultural backgrounds, and gender identities.
I have developed into the therapist I am through working in NHS primary care mental health services in Merseyside and London, and in Higher Educational Counselling Services at University of Liverpool, and University of Chester. When working with me, the focus is on emotional well-being, problems, and functioning as opposed to (but not excluding) diagnosis of mental illnesses i.e., anxiety and depression. I work from a pluralistic perspective, embracing psychotherapeutic knowledge and interventions across the humanistic/medicalised spectrum, drawing on and utilising my professional knowledge and experiences.
If you choose to work with me in addressing your problem, we will work collaboratively, agreeing an approach to that work, and will have an expectation of an outcome. Psychological therapies, despite what some might suggest, do not provide an absolute assurance of a successful outcome. I do not set expectations around cures, and recovery. I pragmatically accept that life will challenge us all at varying times and that it is how we respond to those challenges that define the quality of our wellbeing and mental health.
Our work will often be grouped into four session blocks, reviewing progress and outcome along the way but committing to a focused review on each fourth session. In this way, I hope to empower you to use the knowledge and insight you gain, in order that you have agency and can consider your options as circumstances change, making choice about how you wish to progress. That may mean that you choose to take a break from therapy, move to another therapist, or that you have achieved the outcome you looked for. Our work together can be over the short, medium, or long terms. It is a working collaboration between two adults and in that sense, we can discuss your aspirations and how best to move forward.

Dr. Richard Mason is a psychological therapist registered and accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and a Senior Accredited Personal Development Coach with the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC). He brings 25 years of clinical experience gained in private practice, the English National Health Service and in Higher Education counselling services.
His career has included work in NHS primary care mental health services in Merseyside and London, and counselling roles at the University of Liverpool and the University of Chester. He has worked with adult clients across the lifespan, from diverse cultural backgrounds and with a range of gender identities.
Dr. Mason works with issues such as stress, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, depression, coping with life changes, LGBT matters, relationship and family concerns, trauma and abuse, intimacy-related issues, parenting, anger and offers coaching support. He practises from a pluralistic perspective, drawing on psychotherapeutic approaches across the humanistic and medicalised spectrum to match the work to each person’s needs.
Sessions are collaborative – he and the client agree an approach and set expectations for outcomes while recognising that psychological therapy does not guarantee a cure. He takes a pragmatic stance that life will present challenges at different times and that wellbeing is shaped by how people respond to those challenges.
Therapy is often organised in blocks of four sessions with a focused review at every fourth meeting to assess progress and outcomes. That structure aims to support clients to use the insight they gain and retain agency over their next steps – whether that means pausing therapy, changing therapist, or reaching the goals they sought. Work with Dr. Mason can be short, medium or long term and is a working collaboration between two adults in which aspirations and ways forward can be openly discussed.
He is a gay, older male therapist who offers a non-religious, liberal approach to practice.
Many people ask whether remote therapy can genuinely help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be as effective as conventional in-person sessions.
One major benefit is flexibility. Clients can choose the mode of contact that suits them best – video calls, phone sessions, live chat or in-app messaging – which makes it simpler to fit therapy around work, family and daily life.
Therapists who offer online work are licensed professionals, and clients have the option to change therapists at any time if they feel a different match would be more helpful.
