Laura Scales

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

It is my sincere hope to bring genuine healing and wholeness to individuals, marriages and families.

What is perhaps unique about me is that therapy is not my first career. I feel as though my other careers and life experiences have led me to this time in my life and my practice. I have learned first hand how unexpected life events can throw one off course and how going through change can be painful and yet transformational. In my previous careers, I chose occupations that enabled and empowered others. I cared for people with chronic illness and severe disabilities as a home health aide. I taught rock climbing, ice climbing, sea kayaking, swimming at various levels with a diverse clientele. I cared for the elderly and brought activities to improve the quality of life for residents of a senior living community.

One of my greatest life achievements is climbing the highest point in the western hemisphere, Mt. Aconcagua elevation 22,837 ft. Up above the treeline, looking down on the clouds, far away from the civilized world is where I felt the most centered and at peace and the closest to my higher self. It is during my days as a climber and high altitude mountaineer that I learned how to be fully present in life if only for one moment at a time.

It was in graduate school at Argosy University, on the Denver, Colorado campus that I realized how to continue to follow my passion: helping others build stronger sense of self and healthy relationships and families. After completing a masters program in Marriage and Family Therapy and practicum at West Springs Psychiatric Hospital, I worked in a community mental health outpatient clinic. As a licensed professional, I counseled as an intake, individual and group therapist. My knowledge and empathy has grown significantly while working with people of all ages and backgrounds, addressing a broad range of mental health issues. Today in my private practice, I strive to provide a safe nonjudgemental space for clients to share openly, explore problems and solutions and shed light on relationships, that are no longer desirable.
I believe our mental health and personal well being are tied up in the quality of our personal relationships. The more closely we are connected to others, the happier we feel and the more personal satisfaction we have in our lives.

I work with individuals, couples and families who want to change how they manage conflict, physical and mental health conditions, and stressful life adjustments. I have been trained in many evidence-based therapy modalities that help me to be effective in treating depression, anxiety, relationship and family issues, anger management and people who have experienced trauma. I believe in empowering clients, meaning that the client is the expert on their life and responsible and capable of making their own decisions. My approach to counseling involves evidenced-based practices to include Internal Family Systems Therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, solution focussed and strength-based practices tailored to fit each client’s uniques needs.

When I am not practicing therapy I am enjoying spending as much time as possible in the natural world absorbing all of it’s many gifts.

About

Laura Scales brings a practical and compassionate approach to therapy, helping individuals, couples, and families work toward greater healing and wholeness. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Colorado (license CO LMFT 0001388) and has five years of clinical experience addressing a wide range of concerns including relationship issues, grief, anger management, self-esteem, depression, stress, anxiety, addictions, LGBTQ matters, family conflict, trauma and abuse, intimacy-related issues, parenting challenges, career difficulties, and bipolar disorder.

Before becoming a therapist, Laura followed several other careers that shaped her perspective on resilience and recovery. She cared for people with chronic illness and severe disabilities as a home health aide, taught rock climbing, ice climbing, sea kayaking, and swimming to diverse groups, and worked with older adults to enhance quality of life in a senior living community. Those experiences inform her belief that change is often painful but can also be deeply transformational.

Her time as a high-altitude mountaineer, including summiting Mt. Aconcagua at 22,837 feet – the highest point in the western hemisphere – taught her the value of being fully present, even if only for a single moment. That practice of presence influences her work in therapy and her emphasis on mindful engagement with life.

Laura completed a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Argosy University in Denver and did her practicum at West Springs Psychiatric Hospital. She later worked in a community mental health outpatient clinic where she served as an intake, individual, and group therapist. In private practice she offers a nonjudgmental space for clients to explore problems, consider solutions, and reexamine relationships that no longer serve them.

Her clinical approach is empowering and collaborative – she views each person as the expert on their own life and supports them in making informed choices. Laura is trained in several evidence-based modalities including Internal Family Systems Therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and solution-focused and strength-based practices. She works with clients on managing conflict, coexisting physical and mental health conditions, and navigating stressful life adjustments.

Laura believes that mental well-being is closely connected to the quality of personal relationships – stronger connections often bring greater happiness and life satisfaction. When she is not practicing therapy she spends as much time as possible in the natural world, absorbing its many gifts.

Is Online Therapy the Right Choice for Your Mental Health Journey?

For many common concerns – such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or adapting to life changes – online therapy has been found to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person sessions. This means that people seeking support for these issues can often achieve meaningful progress through virtual care.

Online therapy also offers practical flexibility. Clients can choose the format that fits their preferences and schedule – video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging – making it easier to engage in care without major disruptions to daily life.

All therapists available for online work are licensed professionals, and clients may switch therapists at any time if they would like a different fit. For many people, virtual therapy provides an accessible and adaptable option for addressing everyday mental health and relationship concerns.
