Helen Woodrum

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and have provided outpatient individual therapy for 10 years. I spent the first half of my career providing therapy in community mental health centers; and the second half in an outpatient behavioral health clinic within a hospital. I developed an interest in the area of trauma treatment early on, and have focused much of my post-graduate learning on understanding the effects of complex trauma on individuals, and learning ways to help individuals reprocess their traumatic experiences. Some modalities I frequently use include EMDR, Polyvagal techniques, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal therapy, and Internal Family Systems; and incorporate self-care for mind and body into therapy. I believe in starting with what is most concerning to the client right now, and empowering individuals to find the techniques and self awareness needed to overcome life’s struggles, develop resilience, and learn to care for themselves.
I value my Master’s in Social Work degree, because of the consideration given to social systems and environmental factors, in developing a treatment plan and tailoring the therapy to address each individual’s needs. I have an ongoing passion for learning and empowering others to learn and apply aquired knowledge and self-awareness to their personal experiences. I enjoy providing a therapeutic environment that includes safety, predictability, respect, humor, support, and connection.

About

Helen Woodrum is a licensed clinical social worker in Illinois with 10 years of experience providing outpatient individual therapy. She began her career in community mental health centers and later provided services in an outpatient behavioral health clinic within a hospital, bringing a range of setting-based insights to her work.

Early in her practice Helen developed a strong focus on trauma treatment and has concentrated much of her post-graduate learning on understanding the impacts of complex trauma and methods to help people reprocess traumatic memories. She regularly integrates modalities such as EMDR, polyvagal techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, and Internal Family Systems, while also emphasizing self-care practices for both mind and body.

Her approach begins by addressing what is most pressing for the individual in the present moment, and then supporting clients to identify techniques and develop self-awareness that build resilience and promote healthier self-care. She values her Master’s in Social Work because it highlights the role of social systems and environmental factors when creating a treatment plan and tailoring therapy to each person’s needs.

Helen maintains an ongoing commitment to learning and to empowering others to apply newly acquired knowledge to everyday life. She aims to offer a therapeutic environment characterized by safety, predictability, respect, humor, support, and connection.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people wonder whether virtual therapy really makes a difference. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person sessions.

One key benefit is flexibility – individuals can connect in the format that fits their needs, whether through video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging. This range of options often makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy schedule and to engage in care consistently.

These services are provided by licensed professionals, and if a different fit is needed, clients have the option to switch therapists. Online therapy can be a practical, accessible way to work on common mental health and life challenges while maintaining continuity of care.
