Carolyn Hollingshead

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

I have been a social worker for over 20 years and have worked with many people who are focusing on increasing their quality of life by focusing on healing those things which have been standing in their way.
I have experience treating people of all ages coping with depression, anxiety, PTSD, marital issues, blended families, divorce, death, chronic pain and eating disorders. My special areas of expertise are chronic pain, grief and eating disorders including weight management. I was a Registered Dietitian for over 30 years, have a PhD in Nutrition with an emphasis in communication and have been an LCSW for over 20 years. I have completed the Certified Grief Counseling Specialist (CAGCS). I also have completed Level One of the Gottman Institute. I enjoy focusing on process/insight-oriented modalities and feel the excitement as my client achieves an “aha” moment in the therapeutic process. I am comfortable looking into family of origin topics as well as end of life issues. Because of my health background I am also comfortable dealing with medical issues and take a more holistic approach to clients. I do believe that alternative therapies including somatic therapy can be helpful in the therapeutic process.
I have spent most of my career continually learning new techniques and theories to provide the best care of my clients. I have a tool box of helping techniques which are based on evidence based theories to include cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, solution focused therapy, Socratic Questioning, and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).
My education background includes a BS. In Foods and Nutrition ( which took 13 years to receive due to “life”), a Master’s degree in Health Education, a PhD in Nutrition and a Master’s in Social Work. I taught a Body Image and Eating Disorders class for over 15 years at the University of Utah. I also have training in gerontology and enjoy working with older adults who may be in transition and with families that are struggling with older adult issues. As a widow, I also was a single mother for over 5 years with 2 teenage sons and understand the complexity of singlehood and blended families.
I look forward to working with you.

About

Carolyn Hollingshead brings 22 years of social work experience to her practice, helping people increase their quality of life by addressing the issues that block healing and growth. She works with clients across the lifespan on concerns such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, relationship and marital difficulties, blended-family dynamics, divorce, grief and loss, chronic pain, and eating disorders.

Her particular areas of focus include chronic pain, grief work, and eating disorders with an emphasis on weight management. With a background as a Registered Dietitian for more than 30 years and a PhD in Nutrition that emphasized communication, she combines clinical social work and nutritional insight to offer a holistic approach to care. In addition to her social work practice, she taught a university course on body image and eating disorders for over 15 years.

Carolyn holds advanced degrees in health and nutrition as well as social work, and she is licensed to practice clinical social work in both North Carolina and South Carolina. She has formal grief counseling certification and has completed Level One training through the Gottman Institute. Her ongoing professional development spans gerontology and therapies that address both psychological and medical aspects of well-being.

Her therapeutic style emphasizes process and insight-oriented work, integrating a toolbox of evidence-based methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic approaches, solution-focused techniques, Socratic questioning, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She is open to alternative modalities, including somatic therapies, when these support a client’s progress.

Carolyn is comfortable exploring family-of-origin themes and end-of-life concerns, and she enjoys supporting older adults in transition as well as family systems coping with aging issues. As a widow who raised two teenage sons as a single parent for more than five years, she brings personal insight into the complexities of singlehood and blended families. She looks forward to working collaboratively with individuals seeking meaningful change.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people wonder whether meeting with a therapist remotely can really help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or navigating life changes, research and practice indicate that online therapy can be as effective as traditional in-person care. A major benefit of online sessions is flexibility – clients can connect in the way that fits their schedule and comfort level, whether by video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging. This adaptability makes it easier to maintain continuity of care amid busy lives. Licensed professionals provide these remote services, and clients may choose a different therapist at any time if they feel another fit would be better. Online therapy expands access and convenience while offering the same kinds of therapeutic approaches used in face-to-face work.
