Amy Shafer trained in Psychology and Human Development at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, graduating in 1989, and earned a Master of Social Work with a clinical focus from San Diego State University in 1991. She has practiced as a clinician for three decades and has been a licensed clinical social worker in California since 1994.
Throughout her 30 years of work she has supported people of all ages in a variety of settings, and more recently has focused on adults and geriatric individuals and their families. Her clinical experience covers concerns such as depression, anxiety, stress, family conflict, trauma and abuse, adapting to different life stages, and grief and loss.
Her contemporary practice emphasizes family systems, relationship work, interpersonal recovery, trauma and loss, and practical approaches to managing life stressors. She regards it as a privilege to be part of a support system for individuals and families seeking professional help, and draws on decades of experience to offer an open-minded approach and a range of tools to assist clients.
People often wonder whether receiving therapy online can truly help. For many common concerns - including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and navigating life changes - online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person care.
One major benefit is convenience and flexibility. Clients can connect with therapists through video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or messaging, choosing the format that fits their schedule and comfort level. This adaptability can make it easier to maintain consistent care.
Therapy delivered remotely is provided by licensed professionals, and if someone feels a different match would be better they are free to switch therapists. For many people, online therapy provides an accessible and practical option for addressing everyday mental health and relationship concerns.
