Acea Starks

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

I am a non-traditional therapist with a holistic approach to mental health. I am licensed in Georgia, Alaska, South Dakota, Vermont, and Florida with more than 10 years of experience working with diverse populations.
I would like to provide some information about myself. I am a little ‘out there.’ I have piercings, tattoos, and purple hair. I am a bit of a goth. I came to mental health services a little later than some. I was an English major when I first went to college out of high school. That did not work out very well. I love writing and the English language is beautiful so occasionally I use obscure words or references. If I ever say something that is not understood just tell me and I will rephrase. My second attempt at higher learning was when I was in the nursing program. I knew I wanted to make a difference and ease suffering but to be honest, I do not like to watch people die. I have and can, but I did not want to do it all the time. I was in my 30s when I started my program. I did an associate degree in psychology, a bachelor’s degree in psychology and then a master’s degree in mental health counseling all in one go. It was very stressful as I was also working at the time. I have worked a lot of jobs I did not like and have had some very interesting experiences. I have worked at Wal-Mart (twice) and did a stint as a grave digger (with a shovel). I have many hobbies and interests.
My approach is eclectic because there are no one size fits all treatments. I am very open but believe in setting goals and having accountability. My role is to provide clients with tools to navigate their unique issues and concerns.
I am very big on self care and work life balance. I am not on line everyday and try as often as possible to strap a pack to my back and hide in the woods.

About

Acea Starks is a non-traditional therapist who uses a holistic approach to mental health. She is licensed to practice counseling in Vermont, South Dakota, Georgia, Alaska, and Florida and brings 11 years of clinical experience working with diverse populations.

She took an unconventional path into mental health. After first pursuing an English major, Acea returned to higher education later in life and completed an associate degree in psychology, a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a master’s degree in mental health counseling while also maintaining employment. She began her counseling training in her 30s and has balanced study and work throughout her journey.

Acea is comfortable sharing that her personal style is a bit outside the mainstream – she has piercings, tattoos, purple hair, and identifies with a goth aesthetic. She also values language and writing, and will occasionally use uncommon words or literary references; she welcomes questions if something she says is unclear and will gladly rephrase.

Her early career interests included nursing, and she enrolled in a nursing program before focusing fully on mental health. Along the way she has held many jobs, including working at Wal-Mart twice and a brief stint digging graves by shovel. Those varied experiences inform her practical, down-to-earth perspective.

Acea describes her clinical style as eclectic – she does not believe in one-size-fits-all treatments. She emphasizes goal-setting and accountability while equipping clients with practical tools to address their particular concerns. She prioritizes self-care and work-life balance, and is intentional about stepping away from work when possible – often strapping a pack to her back and hiding in the woods to recharge.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

For many common concerns – including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and adapting to life changes – online therapy can be as effective as traditional in-person care. Research and clinical experience support its use for these kinds of issues.

One major benefit is flexibility. Clients can connect in the format that works best for them, whether that is video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging. This range of options makes it easier to fit therapy into busy schedules and to access care from different locations.

Each participating therapist is a licensed professional, and clients are free to change therapists if they need a different fit. Online therapy offers practical ways to receive consistent support while keeping treatment accessible and adaptable to individual needs.
