John Burkin

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

I entered the mental health field 17 years ago working in the community with people living with severe psychiatric illnesses. These clients like all, wanted to be heard and understood. It just took a different approach and patience. Others were recovering from substance use combined with bipolar and mood disorders. Many clients experience anxiety, and often obsessive thoughts. Learning what worked and what did not helped me meet their needs.

I like to create a safe space for everyone, new and existing. I share at the end of an Intake, “just because you scheduled this first session does not mean I assume you have hired me”. I encourage clients to challenge and fire me if the fit is not there. You have to connect, you must feel comfortable to talk about anything and everything, yeah even sex, and drugs and even that secret you need to get off your chest. I believe a little humor helps to ease the process, though I am direct. I do not sugar coat and I do not encourage venting. I ask you to come to work on feeling better. This is collaboration, you and me. Clients who have found success with me tend to be here and now oriented, open to Mindfulness and ready to heal.

I work with individual adults ages 18 years and older on topics of self-esteem, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive-disorders, depression, mood swings, sexual orientation and coming out, navigating difficult relationships, and a host of other mental health concerns. Helping clients create goals important to them is my top priority. Solution Focused and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies inform my practice.

About

John Burkin entered the mental health field 17 years ago, beginning his work in community settings with people living with severe psychiatric illnesses. He learned early that these clients, like all people seeking help, wanted to be heard and understood – often requiring a different approach and a great deal of patience. He also worked with individuals recovering from substance use alongside bipolar and other mood disorders, and with many who experienced anxiety and obsessive thoughts. Over time he refined what techniques met clients’ needs and which did not.

He aims to create a safe space for everyone who comes into therapy, whether new or returning. At the end of an intake he often tells people, “just because you scheduled this first session does not mean I assume you have hired me,” and he encourages clients to challenge him or end the work if the fit is not right. He expects clients to connect and to feel comfortable talking about anything and everything – even sex, drugs, or the secret they need to get off their chest. While he uses a bit of humor to ease the process, he is direct, does not sugar coat, and does not encourage unstructured venting; instead he asks clients to come prepared to work on feeling better. He frames therapy as a collaboration between client and therapist.

Clients who tend to find success with him are present-focused, open to mindfulness practices, and ready to engage in healing. He works with individual adults ages 18 and older on issues including self-esteem, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, depression, mood swings, sexual orientation and coming out, and navigating difficult relationships, among other mental health concerns. Helping clients create goals that matter to them is a top priority, and his approach is informed by Solution-Focused and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. He is licensed as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in New Mexico (NM LPCC, license CCMH0192341) and as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida (FL LMHC, license MH10655), and he practices in Louisiana.

Is Online Therapy the Right Fit for Your Needs?

Many people wonder whether remote therapy can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to work as effectively as traditional in-person sessions for most people. A major benefit is flexibility – you can meet with a therapist in the way that best fits your life, whether by video call, phone session, live chat, or in-app messaging. This makes it easier to incorporate therapy into busy schedules and to maintain continuity of care. All therapists offering these services are licensed professionals, and if the match isn’t right you are free to switch to a different therapist at any time. Online therapy can provide a practical, effective option for many common mental health concerns while allowing you to choose the format and pace that suit you.
