Dr. Amy Cuellar

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

My name is Dr. Amy Cuellar, and I am a licensed psychologist in the state of Texas. I obtained my PhD in clinical psychology (adult track) from the University of Miami and afterwards completed a pre-doctoral internship (general track) at the James A. Haley VA Hospital and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center. My area of expertise lies in helping people to achieve their visions of recovery from depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, stress, paranoia, and other problems in living so that they lead lives of meaning. Much of my work has focused on helping people overcome barriers in setting, achieving, and sustaining goals in order to live the lives that they want.

My theoretical orientations are rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and solution focused therapy. I am an advocate of using CBT in many cases because it has the strongest scientific evidence to support its efficacy in decreasing symptoms. When someone appears to be struggling with adjustment to a life transition, however, I tend to use solution focused therapy as my theoretical approach. Regardless of theoretical orientation, however, my style is always collaborative and based in my unwavering belief that everyone has the capacity to grow, change, and recover. I view myself as a partner on a team with my client, and that my clients’ knowledge about themselves as just as important as my knowledge of how to provide therapy. My goal for clients is for them to learn skills so that they can become their own therapists. I would be honored to be a partner on your recovery journey and look forward to meeting you soon.

About

Dr. Amy Cuellar is a licensed psychologist in Texas with 17 years of clinical experience. She earned her PhD in clinical psychology on the adult track from the University of Miami and completed a pre-doctoral internship on the general track at the James A. Haley VA Hospital. She then pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center within the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center.

Her clinical work centers on helping people move toward recovery from depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, stress, paranoia, and other problems in living so they can build lives of meaning. A large part of her practice involves helping clients identify and overcome obstacles to setting, achieving, and maintaining goals so they can live in ways that matter to them.

Dr. Cuellar’s theoretical orientation emphasizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and solution-focused therapy. She often uses CBT because it has the strongest scientific support for reducing symptoms, and she leans on solution-focused approaches when a client is navigating an adjustment or life transition. Across approaches her style is collaborative and grounded in a belief that people have the capacity to grow, change, and recover. She sees herself as a team member alongside the client, valuing the client’s self-knowledge as much as her clinical expertise, and aims to teach skills that enable clients to become their own therapists. She is licensed in Texas as a psychologist (license number 33368) and would be honored to be a partner on a client’s recovery journey.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people wonder whether online therapy can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes, evidence indicates online therapy can be as effective as traditional in-person care. A major benefit is flexibility – clients can connect in the format that fits their needs, choosing from video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging. This adaptability makes it easier to incorporate therapy into busy schedules and to continue care during transitions. All therapists available are licensed professionals, and clients may change therapists at any time if they feel a different fit would be better. For many people, online therapy provides a practical, effective way to access professional mental health support.
