Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
My name is Sue, and I am returning to Michigan after living in ND for 12 years, but I do call Michigan my home, I have most recently run my own solo practice and have loved it. I mostly saw clients at my office but did tele-therapy also. I love CBT therapy which helps you think differently – you feel the way you think. I use Motivation therapy and Narrative therapy also. I have had 20 years’ experience as a therapist, 30 years as an RN, and I began as an educator. Obviously, those experiences overlap. I have had experience working with substance abuse, prison work, sex offender therapy and anxiety. I personally had a time when I was very depressed, and thankfully came through it. I enjoy working with families and relationships and give homework. I will be keeping my ND license, but I look forward to working with the Michiganders too. I am blessed to have found a home in the UP! It is so beautiful there. I have children of my own and several grandchildren. There are so few things that I that I have not experienced personally or professionally over many years.
I am an excellent listener and I get to know you personally has soon as possible, so that you will feel comfortable to share. I am excited about so many things now! I have time for myself in my later years, and I will also be able to continue doing the work I love. It does not get better. Thank you for learning a bit about me and I hope to help you as needed. Sue

Susan Nelson returned to Michigan after living in North Dakota for 12 years and considers Michigan her home. She most recently ran a solo practice where she primarily met with clients in her office while also providing tele-therapy options.
With 23 years of experience as a therapist and three decades of work as a registered nurse, Susan brings a broad clinical background that began in education and carried through multiple practice settings. She favors cognitive behavioral therapy because she believes thoughts shape feelings, and she also incorporates motivation therapy and narrative therapy into her work.
Susan has worked with people affected by substance abuse, provided services in prison settings, offered sex offender therapy, and treated anxiety. She enjoys working with families and addressing relationship concerns, and she often assigns therapeutic homework to support progress between sessions. She speaks from personal experience as well – she went through a period of severe depression and recovered.
She is licensed to practice social work in Michigan at the master’s level and is also a licensed clinical social worker in North Dakota; her licenses are MI LMSW 6801085662 and ND LCSW 4511. She will maintain her North Dakota license while looking forward to working with Michiganders as well.
Susan has found a home in the Upper Peninsula and appreciates its beauty. She is a parent and has several grandchildren, and across many years she notes there are few professional or personal experiences she has not encountered. She describes herself as an excellent listener who aims to get to know clients quickly so they feel comfortable sharing. Now in later years with more time for herself, she remains enthusiastic about continuing the therapeutic work she loves and hopes to help others as needed.
For many common concerns – such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes – remote therapy has been shown to be as effective as traditional in-person care. It can be a practical option for people seeking help for these issues.
One major advantage is scheduling flexibility. Clients can choose the format that fits their routine and comfort level – video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging – which makes it simpler to integrate therapy into daily life.
All participating clinicians are licensed professionals, and clients have the option to switch therapists if they need a different fit. Online therapy can offer consistent access to professional support while accommodating varied preferences for how people connect with their therapist.
