Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and trauma specialist with over 10 years of experience working with individuals experiencing varying levels of unwanted mental health obstacles. An office and couch was not my style to impact others, so I built my career coming to them, working with clients inside residential treatment, in-patient psychiatric, and in-home counseling with high risk families. By having worked for the high risk community, I can say not only have I heard “almost” all, but I’ve been there and carried some of the battle scars too. I’ve always preferred environments where I’ve had to give my best work but work fast with client’s who did not have the time or patience for a more drawn out treatment.
It’s been my desire to specialize with those clients who were dealt the most challenging of hands. I guess you can say those are my people. I’m accustomed to working in areas of depressive episodes, panic and anxiety, broken family relationships, life stressors, parenting issues, abnormal psychiatric, spiritual issues, and traumatic experiences.
While I may utilize multiple evidence based treatment strategies, inner healing doesn’t come in a box, and is different for everyone. I believe the best therapy is done through having as much first hand experience in the trenches with what it is that we are working on. Some wisdom can only be gained by experiencing.
Is this counseling or therapy? Counseling may look like just casual chatting back and forth via messaging as some seem to prefer to have a second party help them look at their life. For others focusing on more significant distresses, therapy could consist of the traditional order: a more comprehensive session to identify the sometimes hidden roots of the problem (what sustains it) and then at your readiness some live sessions to begin the work to promote your mind and body Healing, Our Head is still attached to our body, so for some it may be necessary to take re-ownership of both components.
But you may be thinking: Therapy doesn’t really work, I’m not a mushy feelings type of person… You’re in good company; We’re just re-learning balance. You used to have it! Finding again that place of optimal functioning. If your mind rattled your world enough to get you to even consider therapy, it’s more likely you have a talent for a very strong mind, but you may just need to learn to control your power.
Our professional relationship and your trust in my care for people and confidence to help them overcome, I hold as my greatest skills.

Steven Van Schaick is a licensed clinical social worker and trauma specialist practicing in North Carolina with ten years of experience helping people navigate difficult mental health challenges. He built his career by meeting clients where they were – working inside residential treatment, in-patient psychiatric settings, and providing in-home counseling for high-risk families – rather than relying solely on an office couch.
His background includes extensive work with high-risk communities, which has exposed him to a wide range of complex problems and given him a practical perspective shaped by hands-on experience. He prefers treatment settings that require efficient, focused work for clients who need progress without a prolonged timeline.
Steven focuses on clients facing some of the toughest circumstances, including depressive episodes, panic and anxiety, fractured family relationships, life stressors, parenting difficulties, complex psychiatric issues, spiritual concerns, and traumatic experiences. He applies multiple evidence-based strategies while acknowledging that inner healing does not come in a box and looks different for each person.
He believes the most effective therapy combines clinical methods with first-hand experience in the trenches of the issues being addressed. For some people, counseling may take the form of lighter, conversational support delivered through messaging. For others who face more significant distress, therapy often begins with a comprehensive session to uncover underlying factors that sustain the problem, followed by live sessions aimed at restoring both mental and physical well-being. Steven notes that the mind and body are connected, and reclaiming both can be an important part of recovery.
For people skeptical about therapy or who do not see themselves as “mushy feelings” types, Steven emphasizes relearning balance and regaining a level of optimal functioning that may have been lost. He views his professional relationship with clients and their trust in his care as central to helping people overcome challenges.
Many people wonder whether online therapy can genuinely help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, or coping with life transitions, research and practice indicate that remote therapy can be as effective as traditional in-person care.
One major benefit is convenience. Clients can connect with therapists in the way that best fits their lifestyle – via video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging. This flexibility makes it easier to maintain consistent care despite busy schedules or geographic barriers.
All therapists are licensed professionals, and clients have the option to change providers if they feel a different fit would work better. Online therapy offers an accessible route to professional support while preserving many of the same clinical approaches used in face-to-face treatment.
