Self-esteem refers to the way you value and view yourself – your sense of self-worth, confidence, and belief in your abilities. Healthy self-esteem allows you to accept strengths and weaknesses, set boundaries, pursue goals, and cope with setbacks. Low self-esteem often shows up as harsh self-criticism, feelings of inadequacy, avoidance of challenges, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or an ongoing fear of being exposed as a fraud.
Self-esteem is shaped by many factors over time: early relationships, cultural messages, life events, school or work experiences, and internalized beliefs. It is not a fixed trait.
