Ruth Hickmon

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

OVERWHELMED! I don’t know how much more of this I can take. I get it. I already think you are pretty awesome to seek assistance. So, let’s get to work. Perhaps you are feeling hopeless from depression, over-the-edge from anxiety, inattentive because of ADHD, quick-to-click from anger, a salad bowl of feelings from grief, substance use that leads to relationship or legal troubles, or memory from trauma. I am a Master’s level, Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a National Certified Counselor in Florida. My experience has included working with adults in a private practice setting since September 2015. My approach is to offer clients the support, acceptance, insight, and guidance needed to achieve your desired level of functioning. Treatment approaches used are Somatic Theory, Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Mindfulness-Based (MBCT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Person-Centered, Solution Focused Brief (SFBT), and Trauma-Focused CBT.

Other Important Information:
My observance is that as people are becoming busier and some are having to adjust to new daily routines, scheduling can become a problem. That, and the higher demand for therapist is why I am making this announcement on how to cancel an appointment and on my “no show”/cancellation policy. (This policy does not count if I am the one making the cancellation, and I will not cancel you with out giving you notice, or helping to reschedule you).

BetterHelp makes it seem easy to cancel an appointment (or even change counselors) Simply click on Cancel or change therapist. However, this is a gentle reminder for those who may not be aware that it is customary to let your therapist know when you can not make an appointment, (or that you wish to change therapists). Additionally, if something comes up and you do need to cancel it is important to give 24 hours notice; this allows others the possibility of using that appointment time (this is critical now that more people are ready and waiting for appointments).

Cancellations within 24 hours of a session are considered “no shows”. You are allowed one no show, after that BetterHelp may charge you for a session. After the second “no show” I will limit sessions to messaging rather than scheduled live appointments.

I know this policy can be a challenge, and part of therapy is stretching you. Not all of BetterHelp’s counselors have the same policies, and while I prefer to continue working with all my clients, it is ok if you decide to choose a different therapist. Additionally, I encourage you to message me before changing therapist (for any reason) I can assist you in finding a new therapist. And it is helpful to follow up with you on your experiences with me in therapy.

About

Ruth Hickmon offers practical, compassionate support for adults navigating stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties, anger, low self-esteem, depression, trauma and abuse, grief, intimacy concerns, parenting challenges, life transitions, and ADHD. She meets people where they are and works collaboratively to help restore a sense of control and forward momentum.

She is a master’s-level clinician licensed to practice mental health counseling in Florida and holds national certification as a counselor. With six years of clinical experience, Ruth has worked with adults in outpatient settings and brings a steady, empathetic presence to therapy.

Her approach focuses on providing support, acceptance, insight, and guidance so clients can reach their desired level of functioning. She draws on a range of evidence-informed methods including Somatic Theory, Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), person-centered work, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Trauma-Focused CBT to tailor treatment to each person’s needs.

Ruth recognizes that scheduling can be difficult as life gets busier, and she asks clients to give 24 hours notice when canceling an appointment so others may use the time. Cancellations made within 24 hours are treated as no-shows; one no-show is allowed, after which the platform may charge for the session. Following a second no-show, Ruth will limit care to messaging rather than scheduled live appointments. She will not cancel appointments without giving notice and will help reschedule if she needs to change a session.

If someone is considering a different therapist, Ruth encourages messaging her first so she can assist with the transition and follow up on the therapy experience. She aims to make the process respectful and supportive while helping clients find the right fit for their needs.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people ask whether virtual therapy can really help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, or managing life transitions, online therapy has been found to be as effective as traditional in-person sessions for most people. A major benefit is flexibility – clients can connect in the way that suits them best, choosing between video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging. This adaptability makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy schedule and to maintain continuity of care when routines change. Licensed professionals deliver online care, and if someone decides a different therapist would be a better fit, it is possible to switch at any time. Online therapy can be a practical, accessible option for many seeking help with everyday mental health challenges.
