Dr. Magna Porterfield

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

I am a psychologist who is licensed in both the states of Alabama and Georgia and I have had the opportunity to work in the field of psychology for several years. I have worked in the both university settings (as a teacher and counselor) as well as in private practice. I have also had the opportunity to travel and share my knowledge through lectures and workshops. I have the most experience in helping people who struggle with unipolar (but NOT bipolar) depression and anxiety. I also have a considerable amount of experience in working with individuals who have problems with managing stress and managing their emotions. I do not work with issues such as eating disorders, addictions, relationship problems or sexuality concerns.

My counseling style is warm, but also straightforward and honest. I consider myself to be a kind person. and I truly desire to help those who are hurting. In my work with people, I do not spend much time processing the past (i.e., childhood experiences, past trauma, etc.). I believe that true healing comes when individuals take active steps in the therapy process and focus on what they can do in their “present” situation to address their challenges. In my work with clients, I focus on helping them understand how their thoughts impact their emotions and their behavior – principles from the field of cognitive behavior therapy. I also look at the impact of lifestyle habits – diet, rest, exercise, etc. – on mental/emotional health. In addition, I sometimes utilize concepts and strategies from the area of positive psychology, which helps people identify and enhance their strengths (as opposed to merely focusing on people’s weaknesses “abnormalities,” so to speak).

Do you need a helping hand? I would love to be that “hand” and help you make those changes. Working with me will take commitment and will require you to not be just a “passive participant,” so to speak, in your healing and recovery. If you are willing to do your part, I am here for you and would love to work with you. All it takes is that first step and you can make that step today!

About

Dr. Magna Porterfield is a licensed psychologist practicing in Alabama and Georgia. She holds a Georgia psychologist license (PSY001839) and an Alabama psychologist license (1971), and she has provided psychological services for 30 years while based in Alabama.

Her professional background includes roles in university settings as both a teacher and a counselor, as well as work in private practice. She has also traveled to share her expertise through lectures and workshops.

Dr. Porterfield’s primary clinical experience is with unipolar (but NOT bipolar) depression and with anxiety. She also has substantial experience helping people manage stress and regulate emotions. She does not take cases involving eating disorders, addictions, relationship problems, or sexuality concerns.

Her counseling style is warm, straightforward, and honest. She describes herself as a kind practitioner who genuinely wants to help those who are hurting. In treatment she does not spend extensive time processing the past, such as childhood experiences or past trauma, preferring instead to help clients take active steps in the present to address their challenges.

Dr. Porterfield emphasizes how thoughts influence emotions and behavior, drawing on principles from cognitive behavior therapy. She also considers lifestyle habits – including diet, rest, and exercise – when addressing mental and emotional health. At times she incorporates ideas from positive psychology to help clients identify and build on their strengths rather than only focusing on problems.

Working with Dr. Porterfield requires commitment and active participation from the client. She is willing to support individuals who are prepared to do their part in the therapeutic process and encourages taking that first step toward change.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people ask whether meeting with a therapist online can really help. For a range of common concerns – including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and navigating life changes – online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person sessions.

One of the clearest benefits is flexibility. Clients can choose the mode of connection that fits their preferences and schedule, whether that is a video call, a phone session, live chat, or in-app messaging. That flexibility often makes it easier to maintain regular care.

All participating therapists are licensed professionals, and clients have the option to switch providers if they would prefer a different fit. Online therapy can be a practical way to access professional support while balancing other life responsibilities.
