Lori Simmons is a Maryland-based therapist with 16 years of clinical experience who is licensed to practice marriage and family therapy in both Michigan and Florida. She works with individuals, couples, and families across a wide range of concerns, including stress and anxiety, relationship issues, self-esteem, bipolar disorder, LGBT concerns, family conflict, trauma and abuse, intimacy-related problems, eating and sleeping disorders, parenting challenges, anger management, and career difficulties.
Her approach centers on mindful awareness and present-moment living - helping people fully and peacefully experience life. That focus on values, forgiveness, acceptance, compassion, living in the present, and accessing a transcendent sense of self supports symptom reduction and improved functioning. This pathway can be particularly helpful for those who have been unsuccessful with prior therapies, who have experienced a return of symptoms after repeated treatment, or who feel reluctant to engage in the therapeutic process.
Drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and the Gottman Method for couples work, she selects and blends strategies to create a tailored plan that meets each person’s individual or relationship needs. Many people find relief from anger, anxiety, depression, substance or food cravings, and notice better communication and connection in their relationships through this work. They also often develop a healthier relationship with themselves and an increased sense of peace and well-being.
Her aim is to provide strategic tools that enable people to change how they experience circumstances and stressors quickly and permanently, while also improving interactions with others. She looks forward to working with you.
