Rev. Larry VanHook

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

Hello! I am excited to be considered as your counselor and friend! I have spent the last 25+ years counseling many diverse people as a minister, Army and hospital chaplain, and now a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I hold a doctorate in management and three Master degrees (counseling, religion, ministry), but I also hold a passion for help people who feel lost, broken, abandoned, anxious, or traumatized. I am deeply concerned for the well being of marriages and have lots of experience dealing with couples including those surviving infidelity. I also am a Certified Family Trauma Professional and trained in approaches that help treat trauma. Moreover, as a chaplain I am well acquainted with grief and loss including the loss of a child. My counseling approach is integrative, using aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Constructivist, Solution-Focused, mindfulness, family systems, and Emotionally Focused Therapy. I tend to be analytical and curious. I also try to make the experience fun when I can!

About

Rev. Larry VanHook combines a long history of pastoral care with clinical training to support individuals, couples, and families. He has spent more than 25 years counseling diverse people as a minister and as an Army and hospital chaplain, and he brings ten years of experience practicing as a licensed therapist.

He holds a doctorate in management and three master’s degrees in counseling, religion, and ministry. He practices as a licensed marriage and family therapist in Texas (LMFT number 202992) and is a Certified Family Trauma Professional with additional training in trauma-focused approaches.

Rev. VanHook helps with a wide range of concerns including stress, anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, trauma and abuse, depression, grief (including loss of a child), intimacy concerns, sleep disorders, parenting challenges, anger management, self-esteem, career difficulties, bipolar disorder, coping with life changes, coaching, compassion fatigue, and ADHD. His work is integrative in nature – drawing on cognitive behavioral techniques, constructivist and solution-focused methods, mindfulness practices, family systems perspectives, and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

He approaches therapy with an analytical and curious stance and aims to bring warmth and even a bit of levity when appropriate. He holds a particular concern for the health of marriages and has extensive experience working with couples, including those recovering from infidelity.

Practical notes for prospective clients in Texas: sessions must take place while the client is located in Texas and the therapist must know the client’s location; no one else should be present in the room during sessions; casual dress is acceptable; if another person will join a session they must view the informed consent and be approved through the platform; and if a client leaves the state, sessions must be postponed.

When first posting, Rev. VanHook requests the following information: the client’s family situation; any past mental health diagnoses and current medications with dosages; a brief description of current social supports; a short account of any traumas in the client’s history; relevant medical conditions that affect mental well-being; any developmental delays during childhood; any substance abuse or addictions relevant to treatment; the client’s strengths and limitations; and specific details about the presenting problem.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people ask whether meeting with a therapist online can really help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or major life transitions, online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person care. One major benefit is flexibility – clients can choose the format that fits their life best, whether that is video sessions, phone calls, live chat, or in-app messaging. This range of options makes it easier to arrange regular appointments and maintain momentum in treatment. Licensed professionals provide online therapy, and if a client ever wants a different therapeutic match they can switch to another therapist. For those balancing busy schedules, geographic limits, or mobility needs, online therapy can be a practical way to access consistent support for common mental health and relationship concerns.
