Prof. John Checkett combines deep academic training with hands-on clinical experience. He holds multiple university degrees in the social sciences, including a master’s degree in Women’s Studies - the first man in Florida to earn that degree - and additional degrees in communication arts and social work. He also taught Women’s Studies at the university level.
His clinical background includes work in emergency screening, where he provided rapid assessments for urgent mental health situations with little or no notice, and several years working in the prison system with inmates experiencing mental health difficulties. He is a Florida Licensed Clinical Social Worker; his license is registered under sw18820. Over the course of eleven years in practice he has developed a pragmatic, informed approach to care.
An attentive listener and clear communicator, Prof. Checkett focuses on matters related to gender, couple relationships - often rooted in communication - and social justice. He uses an integrative method that draws on cognitive behavioral therapy, Jungian approaches, and narrative therapy to address topics such as self-care, empowerment, self-image, self-esteem, and conflict resolution.
