David Demorest

Holistic Jungian therapist specializing in trauma and relationships

About

David has a very diverse background. In addition to Masters in Mental Health Counseling, he has a Maters in Biology/Biochemistry and worked in Research. David changed fields and worked 25 years as a radiochemist which combined nuclear chemistry and physics.
As a counselor his background has been very beneficial in understanding the processes underlying behavior and mental health. As a result of his work in industry David has good people skills which are essential in working with clients with mental health issues.

David provides an eclectic approach in counseling theory and uses Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Counseling, Schema Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy. He is trained in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback which are good tools to help clients with issues such as depression, anxiety disorders and addiction. David’s initial approach is to develop a trusting relationship with the client. He then works with the client to identify the specific issues. A treatment plan is developed to address these issues. As treatment proceeds this plan may be revised as specific issues come up. When the client completes the plan, he will be reassessed. Depending on the clients progress the client may be discharged with specific goals to work on. If there are still unresolved issues a new treatment plan will be developed and treatment continued. If there are issues that require a different approach David may refer the client to another counselor that specializes in the client’s specific issues.

On a personal level David has three adult children and two grandsons. David was raised in the mountains of Wyoming and has a place south of Jackson Hole which he spends as much time as he can. There his closest neighbors are elk, moose, and wolves. David lives most of the time in Boise. He has been fortunate to have traveled the world a great deal spending time in South East Asia and China. He recently spent time in Tuscany and in Malta. He still skis, canoes, loves to fly fish and generally spend time in nature.

About

David Demorest brings a rare blend of scientific training and clinical counseling to his practice. He holds a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling as well as a master’s in Biology/Biochemistry, and prior to counseling he worked in research and spent 25 years as a radiochemist, combining nuclear chemistry and physics. He has 19 years of experience as a therapist and practices in Idaho.

David’s science background supports a clear, evidence-informed understanding of the processes that influence behavior and mental health, while his long career in industry helped him develop strong people skills that are useful when working with clients facing emotional and psychological challenges. He is licensed as a professional counselor in both Oregon and Wyoming.

He uses an eclectic approach to counseling, drawing on Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Counseling, Schema Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy. David is trained in biofeedback and neurofeedback, tools he applies with clients dealing with issues such as depression, anxiety disorders, and addiction.

David begins treatment by building a trusting therapeutic relationship and working with the client to pinpoint specific concerns. Together they develop a treatment plan that is revisited and adjusted as new issues arise. When a plan is completed the client is reassessed; depending on progress the therapist may discharge the client with specific goals to continue working on, or create a new plan and continue treatment. If a different approach is more appropriate, David will refer the client to a counselor who specializes in that area.

Outside of his professional life, David has three adult children and two grandsons. Raised in the mountains of Wyoming, he maintains a place south of Jackson Hole where his nearest neighbors are elk, moose, and wolves, and he spends as much time there as he can. He lives most of the time in Boise and has traveled extensively, including time spent in Southeast Asia, China, Tuscany, and Malta. He continues to enjoy outdoor activities such as skiing, canoeing, and fly fishing, and generally values time spent in nature.

Is Online Therapy the Right Step Toward Better Mental Health?

Many people wonder whether online therapy can make a real difference. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person sessions for most situations.

A major advantage is flexibility – individuals can connect with a therapist in the format that best fits their needs and schedule, whether by video call, phone session, live chat, or in-app messaging. This variety makes it easier to integrate therapy into a busy life and to choose the communication method that feels most comfortable.

Therapy delivered remotely is provided by licensed professionals, and if someone feels the need for a different match they can switch therapists at any time. For many people facing everyday mental health challenges, online therapy offers an accessible and effective option to pursue support and growth.
