Carol Mayfield is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and addictions counselor practicing in North Carolina, bringing 36 years of experience in mental health, addictions, and crisis intervention. Her involvement with these fields began while she was in graduate school in Southern Illinois, when volunteering at a drop-in crisis agency sparked a lasting interest in meeting people where they are and supporting them through immediate struggles.
She earned a graduate degree in Rehabilitation Counseling with a focus on mental health and addictions, and later returned to school in New Orleans to complete a Master of Social Work. Along the way she worked in both residential and outpatient settings, supporting people with addictions, mental health disorders, and eating disorders, and has continued to provide crisis intervention, therapy, and addictions treatment throughout her career.
Carol takes a collaborative, compassionate approach that helps people observe what works and what does not in their lives, clarify what they want to change, and find paths that fit their goals. She recognizes that some circumstances cannot be altered, and she emphasizes how shifting thoughts and beliefs about those circumstances can change how people relate to others and to the world.
She is guided by strong ethics and respect for personal choice, believing that each person has the right to determine their own way of being as long as they do not harm others and, ideally, themselves. Carol is accepting of people of different races, cultures, beliefs, colors, values, sexual preferences, and genders.
Calm and easy to talk with, Carol listens attentively and brings a gentle, caring presence to therapy. She enjoys reading and listening to books, watches very little television, and is an animal lover who particularly likes cats. She has lived in Washington, Kentucky, Illinois, Alabama, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, and Colorado, has worked extensively with military Veterans, and comes from a military family.
She holds a North Carolina license as a clinical social worker - a credential that reflects advanced social work training and clinical practice (NC LCSW C005069).
