I have been counselling since 2008. This was firstly in the voluntary charity sector before setting up my own successful private practice in 2012, after achieving my BA ( Hons) in Counselling. This added to my Foundation Degree in Counselling, which I had already achieved. I still continue to work in the Bereavement voluntary sector providing Supervision to other Counsellors.
For myself, I have experienced therapy before, so I do know what it feels like to sit in the opposite chair, and most importantly, the benefits of Counselling. As well as great deal of experience in the Counselling environment, I also have a wide experience of many of life’s issues such as divorce, bereavement, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, redundancy, unemployment, retirement, moving to another part of the country, plus many other issues. In previous occupations, I have gained a wealth of experience in Coaching, Training, People Development and also experienced over many years how much the workplace has changed, how the demands on people have increased substantially with ever decreasing resources and the toll that this takes on people, including management.
.
You may have reached a point in your life when you feel that you need to ask for help to assist you in trying to deal with an issue, or in trying to understand it, or in coming to terms with it. There may be an issue in your life which is causing you distress or anxiety, or it may be that you may not be feeling right about something and you are unable to pinpoint the reason why. In a welcoming, secure and confidential environment, without being judgmental, I can help you explore those issues and feelings. We are however all unique and our experiences are unique as well, so there is no one size fits all. By really listening empathetically to what you are saying and reflecting back to you what I am hearing and feeling, we can work together in overcoming or coming to terms with the issues.
Counselling is not really about telling you what to do, it is more about helping you to help yourself. Within the Counselling environment and with my help, you can decide on the best way forward for you. I will draw on different models of therapy to help you and these therapies can really help you understand your issue.
I like to also approach your situation from a practical view and so do not just look at your presenting issue, but importantly look at the causes and what are the factors that are feeding into it, thereby prolonging your situation and causing your continued distress.

Alan Cox has been counselling since 2008. He began his work in the voluntary charity sector and went on to establish a private practice in 2012 after completing a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Counselling, building on an earlier Foundation Degree in Counselling.
He continues to work in the bereavement voluntary sector, providing supervision to other counsellors. Having experienced therapy himself, he understands what it feels like to sit in the opposite chair and recognises the positive impact counselling can provide.
Over the years he has worked with many of life’s challenges, including divorce, bereavement, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, redundancy, unemployment, retirement and relocating to another part of the country, among other concerns.
In previous roles he gained practical experience in coaching, training and people development, and observed how workplace demands have grown while resources have often reduced, taking a toll on staff and management alike.
Alan offers a welcoming, secure and confidential space in which he listens empathetically and reflects back what he hears. His approach is collaborative rather than directive – helping people to help themselves. He draws on a range of therapeutic models and takes a practical view, exploring not only the presenting issue but also the causes and factors that are maintaining it, so clients can work toward overcoming or coming to terms with their difficulties.
Many people ask whether online therapy can genuinely help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person sessions.
One major benefit is flexibility. Clients can connect in the way that suits them best – by video call, by phone, via live chat or through in-app messaging – which makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy life.
Each therapist working online is a licensed professional, and if a different fit is needed it is possible to switch practitioners. That combination of effectiveness and convenience makes online therapy a practical option for many people considering support for everyday mental health concerns.
