Steven Osterstrom is a New York State licensed clinical social worker with 24 years of experience providing individual and group psychotherapy. He has worked with people facing a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, identity questions, relationship difficulties, parenting challenges, career issues, addiction and co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns, as well as those who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse.
He has taught at two universities for the past 20 years, helping graduate students in Social Work develop the clinical skills needed for effective professional practice. Steven has also volunteered in the prison system through the Alternatives to Violence Project, leading groups with inmates at several prisons in New York State and Pennsylvania to explore nonviolent ways of addressing conflict. He views these experiences as having strengthened his ability to work across diverse populations and to adopt a more anti-racist, gender-inclusive stance.
Steven’s therapy style is warm and interactive, grounded in a Compassion-Focused approach that emphasizes clients' strengths and capacities for facing obstacles. He treats people with respect, sensitivity, and compassion while holding that many of the answers to life’s difficulties come from within each person. His clinical work draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and several related methods, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Rational Emotive Therapy, with mindfulness practices woven into much of his approach. He helps clients gently uncover belief patterns that interfere with living well and supports the courage it takes to explore vulnerability and build resilience. As a licensed clinical social worker in New York (LCSW #070801), Steven combines clinical training and lived experience to support clients seeking a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
He looks forward to working with those who are ready to take the first steps toward change and greater well-being.
