Phil D’Agostino approaches therapy with a practical, results-focused orientation that aims to restore functioning quickly for people experiencing depression, anxiety, or significant relationship struggles.
He relies on methods and principles commonly associated with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and brief therapy, favoring a here-and-now approach that defines problems clearly and builds a concrete plan of action to improve them.
His initial professional training was as a scientist and science educator, and working with people from many backgrounds led him to recognize how similar people are in their vulnerability to anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties. He also trained in hypnosis to address obsessive thinking and support behavior change, including issues such as smoking, overeating, and social anxieties, and completed graduate studies in psychological counseling through the UNC-G program.
Since he began helping others in 1989, Phil has accumulated 29 years of experience in providing therapy services. He holds a license to practice as a clinical mental health counselor in North Carolina (NC LCMHC 3183), which authorizes him to provide professional therapy in the state.
Over the years he has authored nearly two dozen training courses on topics like gaining emotional control, resolving conflicts, working with difficult people, leadership, and management. He is also the author of Ready Access CBT for Working Professionals (Lorman Education) and a book for the public titled Naked Thinking.
Phil focuses his work on people who are suffering from depression and anxiety, including transitional issues such as job loss, relationship loss, asserting oneself at work, or fears about speaking in groups or to a boss. He also addresses relationship problems broadly - marital and couples concerns, family issues, and work-related or co-worker conflicts - helping clients develop practical strategies to regain control and improve their lives.
