Karen Yuen is a BACP registered counsellor based in the United Kingdom with over 8 years of experience working within NHS Direct, low cost community therapy and spiritual settings. She offers counselling for adults across issues including stress, anxiety, family difficulties, trauma and abuse, depression, self-esteem, career concerns and coping with life changes.
As a British East Asian woman of mixed heritage, Karen brings an awareness of how culture, family values and upbringing shape our perspectives, relationships and wellbeing. She creates a supportive, non-judgemental space where clients can be heard and begin to explore what is affecting them.
Using an integrative therapeutic approach, Karen draws on person centred, EMDR, cognitive, spiritual and transcultural methods, adapting to the needs of each client and their journey. Her work is trauma informed and grounded in compassionate inquiry, intuition, genuineness and empathy. She also introduces practical tools and strategies when appropriate, including mindfulness, body awareness, breathing meditation, role play and visualisation to support change and growth.
Karen aims to help people develop a healthier relationship with themselves, build trust and self-confidence, and feel more empowered and whole. She has worked with individuals in a variety of settings and values the insights gained from living and travelling in India, Hong Kong, Nepal, Portugal and France as well as growing up in London.
Her qualifications include a BSc (Hons) in Counselling and Therapeutic Studies (2:1) from Leeds Metropolitan University, 2005; a PGCert in Daily Living and Wellbeing (Merit) from Sheffield Hallam University, 2023; and CPD certificates in Advanced Counselling Psychology, Recovery from Coercive, Cultic and Spiritual Abuse, Compassionate Inquiry and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing). She is a Registered Member of the BACP and works with people aged 18 and over on either a short term or long term basis, depending on individual needs.
Karen’s usual working hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 11am - 6pm GMT, with additional availability offered outside those times - please check her schedule for current slots. Please note that BetterHelp marks public holidays as ‘Holiday’ which do not always coincide with her availability; a general rule is that if you can click on an available slot then you can book it.
If you have questions or are ready to begin, Karen welcomes contact and looks forward to supporting you on your counselling journey. Please note BetterHelp counsellors including herself do not provide a crisis service. If you need to speak to someone immediately and are in the UK, please contact NHS 111, your GP or the emergency services.
