Joseph Setchel is a licensed mental health counselor practicing in Florida with over 21 years of experience in the mental health field. He began his pursuit of helping professions in 1995 at Stetson University and earned a Bachelor of Psychology with a minor in Music in 1999.
After a short break, he returned to academic training at the University of Central Florida and completed a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology in 2002. Following a two-year post-Master’s internship and several years of applied clinical work, he received his professional license in mental health counseling in 2007.
Joseph adapts his therapeutic approach to the individual. Some people benefit from cognitive behavioral techniques to address unhelpful thoughts and emotions, while others respond better to more existential perspectives. He typically integrates multiple modalities, including solution-focused therapy, tailoring interventions to the client’s goals and preferences.
His practice emphasizes practical outcomes: increased insight, improved coping skills, clearer decision-making, and enhanced emotional regulation. Core values that guide his work include honoring client choice, fostering authenticity and honesty, maintaining cultural awareness, and offering positive regard.
Joseph works with concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, coping with life changes, ADHD, addictions, relationship and family conflicts, trauma and abuse, grief, intimacy-related issues, sleep disorders, parenting challenges, anger management, self-esteem, career difficulties, and bipolar disorder. He is licensed to practice mental health counseling in both Florida and New Hampshire and brings more than two decades of clinical experience to his work.
Many people question whether online therapy can truly help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or navigating life changes, online therapy has been shown to be comparable in effectiveness to traditional in-person sessions.
One major advantage is flexibility - clients can connect in the way that suits them best, whether by video call, phone session, live chat, or in-app messaging. This flexibility makes it easier to integrate therapy into a busy schedule and to access support from different locations.
Therapists providing online care are licensed professionals, and clients may switch therapists at any time if they seek a different fit. For many people, the combination of evidence-based approaches and convenient connection options makes online therapy a practical and effective choice for addressing everyday mental health concerns.
