James Michehl is a licensed clinical professional counselor in Illinois who combines formal training with a practical, collaborative approach to help individuals and families move toward their goals. He earned a master’s degree in education from DePaul University in Chicago and was later accepted into DePaul’s community counseling program, further developing his clinical foundation. He has been licensed since 2008 and brings 10 years of direct therapeutic experience to his work.
James has worked with a wide range of age groups, including children aged 5 to 12, adolescents, young adults, adults, families, and couples. He has facilitated groups for individuals on the autism spectrum and supports first responders through programs such as Firefighter Behavioral Health that address suicidal prevention. He also assists police departments with critical stress debriefings following high-stress incidents.
As a trained mediator through DePaul University, James offers additional skills to help couples who may need more than traditional couples therapy to resolve differences. He believes therapy is a joint effort, and he works with each person to create a tailored treatment plan that serves as a practical roadmap. Progress, challenges, and any barriers to success are discussed openly so the plan can be adjusted as needed.
James is also a certified hypnotherapist and applies hypnotherapy techniques to support smoking cessation, anxiety reduction, weight loss, and building confidence. Outside of clinical work, he pursues wildlife art and wood carving, and his pieces are shown in art galleries and online.
Many people wonder whether remote therapy can really help. For common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and life transitions, online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person sessions.
One major benefit is flexibility - clients can connect with a therapist in the format that best fits their life, whether that is a video session, a phone call, live chat, or messaging through an app. This range of options makes it simpler to schedule care around work, family, and other commitments.
Licensed professionals provide the clinical care, and clients have the option to change therapists if they need a different fit. For many people facing everyday mental health challenges, online therapy offers an accessible and effective pathway to support.
