About

Cheryl Patterson pursued a career in counseling after struggling to find the help she needed and then meeting a therapist named Cyndee who encouraged her to explore graduate study. That encouragement led her to Adler Graduate School and a shift from hands-on nursing into mental health work, a path shaped by both personal experience and practical exposure to recovery settings.

Most of Cheryl's early career was spent as a registered nurse in labor, delivery, postpartum and nursery care, including roles as a nurse manager. She later worked in adult psychiatric nursing for two years before moving into counseling positions. Her first clinical therapy role was at Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge, where she spent three years, and she later launched and supervised a recovery house supporting six men in a peer-directed environment.

Cheryl holds credentials as an RN - registered nurse - and as an LMFT - licensed marriage and family therapist. She is married and the mother of three grown children. Her areas of expertise include individual counseling, couples counseling, parenting across the lifespan, and navigating life transitions. All of her counseling is spiritually focused, and she integrates her clinical background and lived experience to support clients through change and recovery.

Therapeutic Approaches and Remote Support

Client-Centered Therapy places the client's perspective at the center of the work, offering a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where individuals and couples can explore feelings and values. This approach helps when people are facing life transitions, relationship questions, or uncertainty about next steps.

Motivational Interviewing focuses on strengthening a person's own motivation for change through collaborative conversation. It can be especially helpful for clients working on recovery goals, behavior change, or ambivalence about next moves.

Narrative Therapy invites clients to examine the stories they tell about themselves and their relationships, and to identify alternative narratives that better reflect their strengths and hopes. This method supports people dealing with identity shifts, family patterns, or major life changes.

Choosing the right approach is part of the therapeutic process. Cheryl collaborates with each client to identify which methods fit their needs, goals, and preferences, adjusting the plan as progress is made.

Online therapy offers flexible options - video calls, phone sessions, live chat, and text-based messaging - that make it easier to fit counseling into a busy life. These formats allow licensed professionals to provide consistent support across distances and schedules, helping clients access care from home, work, or on the go.
